WORCESTER – The two candidates vying for the District 5 City Council seat squared off in a spirited 40-minute debate Thursday night that brought out sharp differences between them.

Incumbent Matthew E. Wally and challenger Johnhaynes Beckles Honeycutt Sr. didn’t agree on much during the debate held at Worcester State University, with perhaps the most glaring difference being on the tax rate issue.

Honeycutt said he supported separate tax rates for residential and commercial-industrial properties, with a more favorable rate for homeowners.
