Mass. Pike project could transform Worcester rail line. Here’s why

WORCESTER – For anyone leaving Worcester in the morning to commute to Boston, the portion of the Mass. Pike in Allston may be just another bend on the highway where bumper-to-bumper traffic drags along.

But the state considers it outdated infrastructure, and for more than a decade has made it the focal point of planned reconstruction efforts that could cost at least $2 billion and give birth to a new station, known as West Station, between the Boston Landing and Lansdowne stops.

Throughout the years, many have said the construction will have a ripple effect in Central Massachusetts and elsewhere in the state – and the calls to take into account the needs of the region continue.

In a report released Thursday, March 19, the Worcester Regional Research Bureau described the Allston renovation as “an opportunity” for the Worcester/Framingham Line, while calling for the communities along the rail line to push for infrastructure improvements on the existing line before work on the Allston portion of Mass. Pike starts.
