Given the timbre of our politics during President Barack Obama’s tenure in the White House, it is not news to most of us that the communal spirit necessary for a democratically elected body to govern responsibly has been hijacked by selfishness and personal agendas.

It was a shock, nevertheless, to witness this destructive governance tactic in real time during Tuesday’s City Council deliberations on setting the city’s 2017 commercial and residential tax rate.

A report by The Worcester Regional Research Bureau had noted that since the city implemented a dual tax rate system in 1984 – taxing commercial and residential properties at different rates – businesses have increasingly been shouldering a disproportionate tax burden relative to homeowners.
